2021 FELLOW FOCUS: JAKITA O. THOMAS + PHARAOH'S CONCLAVE

camelback

What propelled you into the entrepreneurial space? And what do you enjoy most about being a founder?

The ability to impact youth and help them marry their passion and purpose to careers is what propelled me into the entrepreneurial space. I love being able to directly impact young people, and I love seeing where that impact takes them in terms of the amazing things they accomplish in their careers and their lives.

Tell me about an experience you had as an entrepreneur or in starting your company that exemplified one of Camelback's core values: "Belief in Mission + Vision"; "Unafraid of Failure"; "Constant Learner"; "Humble + Hungry"; and "Give First."

[Constant Learner] When COVID first appeared in the U.S. in late January/early February of 2020, we anticipated that it might last well past the summer of 2020. We envisioned what a 100% virtual summer camp experience might look like. We had no idea if it would actually work or if we'd fall on our faces, but spent a weekend assessing what that pivot might look like and even put up an MVP website to see if anyone would be interested in signing up. The following Monday, we got our first call from an executive director telling us that all of their face-to-face summer programming had been cancelled and asking if we had any 100% virtual offerings.

Combining both her academic passions and her gaming background, Dr. Jakita Thomas is working to transform the future of esports.

Pharaoh's Conclave, a non-profit she started with her husband Erich, has set a goal of placing 500 Black and Brown youth in esports career opportunities over the next two years through a combination of "online skills-building platform, league, and our apprenticeship program," Thomas tells Hypepotamus."

To help reach that goal, Pharoah's Conclave was recently named as a recipient of Google for Startups Black Founder Fund.

As Pharoah's Conclave grows, Thomas answered our questions about the organization's origin and how building a more diverse esports workforce can help move the industry forward.

Meet the Female Gamer Taking the Male-Dominated World of eSports by Storm

"Born in the South Korean city of Daejeon, Kim Se-yeon ("Geguri"), 19, started playing games with her mom when she was just 5 years old. Today, she plays for the Shanghai Dragons in the Overwatch League, a professional e-sports league produced by Overwatch developer Blizzard Entertainment. Geguri started her Overwatch career playing as the character Zarya (her main), a powerful tank who can absorb incoming blows and redirect them toward her opponents in the form of a laser beam.

Geguri has been reluctant to embrace the role of trailblazer. She prefers instead to focus on the immediate mission at hand: helping her Dragons recover from their winless first season in the Overwatch League (the team suffered a 42-game losing streak, though they’re fairing better this season, with a 6-6 record.) And who can blame her? After all, none of her male colleagues have to worry about representing an entire gender. Still, she’s increasingly aware that she has a role to play in the world of competitive esports that goes beyond winning games.

Be My Player Two?

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day this past month, I wanted to focus on couple gamers and those who game with their significant other. What could be better than sharing your favorite hobby with your favorite person?! For me, this is a relatively new experience. In all my previous relationships I was the gamer and none of my past boyfriends expressed the slightest interest in gaming. Crazy-- I know! Which is why I love that in my current relationship I am able to share my love of gaming with my boyfriend, who’s just as a big of a gamer as me! Whether he’s eating my dust in Mario Kart or dragging me through Aperture Labs in Portal 2 at speed that would even make GLaDOS mildly amused, being able to share our love of gaming has allowed us to connect in a way I have never experienced before. Other than just helping me collect all the Wumpa fruit in Crash, playing together has strengthened our relationship in unexpected ways.
